Steering Gear Design

Steering Gear Design

Introduction:

A steering gear is a critical mechanism that controls the direction of a vehicle or vessel. It allows the operator to adjust the orientation of the wheels or rudder, facilitating precise steering and navigation.

Procedure:

To start, I analyzed the key components of a steering system, such as the flywheel, rack, and worm gear, to ensure their functions were accurately represented in my design.

Using CATIA V5, I meticulously modelled each part of the steering gear and assembled the components to form the complete system. After finalizing the 3D design, I conducted simulations using CATIA's DMU Kinematics module. These simulations verified that the steering wheel's rotation correctly translated into the movement of the car's wheels, confirming the precision and functionality of the design.

Technical details:

The design features a worm gear to convert the steering wheel’s rotational movement into linear motion. The rack, connected to rods that steer the car’s wheels, moves in response to the steering input, ensuring smooth directional control.
